Houston Newsmakers Nov. 1: Election day predictions; Equal rights or bathroom safety

HOUSTON – Expert opinions galore on this week's Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall.

Dallas Jones, the President and CEO of Elite Change LLC said mayoral candidate Ben Hall's strategy of embracing the anti-Houston Equal Rights Ordinance is flawed because he may be perceived as a one-issue candidate.

The Houston Mayor's race is traditionally nonpartisan but this year is taking on a more partisan tone, which may help the anti-HERO cause.

"People need help and one way to help them is give them a partisan connection and that I think is part of the strategy to turn out support," said University of Houston Political Science Professor Brandon Rottinghaus, Ph.D. "People understand where their ideologies will fit with respect to each candidate, then they can vote accordingly."

What will it mean for the Mayor's race and others being decided? David Jennings of BigJollyPolitics.com says the partisan tone and the heavier than normal turnout of early voters bodes well for conservative issues and candidates on the ballot. He is surprised at what he perceives as a Republican preference for Mayoral candidate Bill King.

"I would have thought perhaps Ben Hall would have gotten some of the social conservative votes or Stephen Costello some of the fiscally conservative votes," Jennings said. "But it looks like they're all breaking for Bill King."

Of course all of it is speculation and educated guess work. The real test will be up to voters on Nov. 3. Please plan to vote if you have not already done so.
