Wife thanks construction crew after they rescue her husband from burning car

SUGAR LAND, Texas – A Sugar Land woman is thanking the strangers who pulled her husband, 48-year-old Cathan Kirkwood, from a burning car Wednesday.

"I'm extremely grateful that they were there, and able to help and risk their own lives, and their own bodies of being burnt and injured to help him," said Lisa Freeman, Kirkwood's wife. "I couldn't ask for anything more."

Kirkwood crashed his car near the intersection of Shadow Bend and Winding Brook in the Great Bend subdivision Wednesday. The car went over the curb, slammed into a tree, and began to burn with Kirkwood trapped inside.

Members of a construction crew who were building a fence nearby rushed to help.

They used bricks and a fire extinguisher to try to smash the glass until finally a sledge hammer broke through the windows.

Kirkwood was rushed to Oak Bend Richmond Hospital. He had surgery on his leg Thursday morning and is recovering.
