High water, trees down after Halloween storms move through area

HOUSTON – The rain Thursday was non-stop for hours and widespread. There really wasn't an area that was spared by this line of storms.

To the north, the high water was more than just an inconvenience. At least one driver needed help getting out. On the south side of town, more drivers going through flooded streets.  The high water on these roads wasn't slowing drivers down.

On the east side, big trucks made big waves on the freeways. And to the west, bayous and waterways filled up fast and more drivers had to pass through high water.

The weather also brought power outages to some areas and put a damper on some folks' Halloween plans. It will be a muddy night for the trick-or-treaters.

The Flash Flood Watch for southeast Texas expired at 4pm.

The flooding and severe weather threat moved out with the front in the evening.  All of the rain began moving out from west to east staring at 6pm.

Earlier Thursday, Houston TranStar reported several freeways with high water throughout the Houston area:

  • Beltway 8 East southbound at Spencer Highway: 3 frontage road lanes
  • East Sam Houston Tollway northbound at Spencer Highway: 2 ramp lanes
  • East Sam Houston Tollway southbound at Spencer Highway: 2 ramp lanes
  • FM 865 Cullen Blvd. northbound before Almeda Genoa:1 mainlane
  • East Freeway outbound at Lockwood Drive: 1 mainlane
  • Gulf Freeway northbound at 610 South Loop: 2 mainlanes
  • 610 East Loop northbound at Clinton Drive: 1 mainlane
  • North Freeway at State Highway 242: 2 frontage road lanes

Officials with the Harris County Flood Control District said bayous and creeks that are near top of banks include (as of 2:30pm):

  • Clear Creek, which is overbanks from FM 528 downstream to Clear Lake
  • Cypress Creek, which is overbanks at Cypresswood Drive (east of Interstate 45)
  • South Mayde Creek, which is overbanks at Greenhouse.

Minor flooding is occurring at these locations, but no homes are threatened.

The following channels continue to rise as stormwater drains into them: 

  • West fork of the San Jacinto River
  • East fork of the San Jacinto River
  • Cedar Bayou
  • Willow Spring Bayou (nearing crest)
  • Spring Creek
  • Cypress Creek
  • Turkey Creek (nearing crest)
  • Hunting Bayou (crested on upper end, near crest on lower end)

The following channels have crested and are falling: 

  • Goose Creek
  • Armand Bayou (nearing crest)
  • Willow Creek (at crest)
  • Little Cypress Creek (nearing crest)
  • Carpenters Bayou (crested and falling)
  • Beamer Ditch (crested and falling)
  • Brays Bayou (crested and falling)
  • Keegans Bayou (crested and falling)

Both of Houston's airports  reported 15-30 minute delays earlier Thursday. Check Bush and Hobby flight delays here.

Due to heavy rains earlier, several streets experienced high water near the University of Houston campus. Authorities asked drivers to limit traveling through the area and exercise caution on all roadways.
