Hair shop owner shot during attempted robbery

HOUSTON – A hair shop owner is in the hospital after he was shot during an attempted robbery near downtown.

Police say it happened at around 2 p.m. Friday at Mr. Indian Hair in the 4800 block of Almeda Road. Two men allegedly barged into the store wearing bandanas and demanded hair.

"They said they came in with bandanas across their face and immediately started using profanity, telling them to get down," said Daaiyah Farooq, whose son owns the store.

She says her son, daughter and a family friend were all inside at the time. The son was in a back room when Farooq says the men started telling her daughter and the family friend to also get in back.

"So he thought they were attacking his sister, so that's when he came out," Farooq said about her son.

At some point one of the men shot the owner in the leg before both got away in a green Ford pickup. Police say they located the pickup, but the men were not inside.

The owner is in the hospital, but is expected to be OK.

"This is a serious problem we see happening all over the city," Farooq said.

Over the past week there have been a total of six hair store robberies, including this one.

It's not the first time that Mr. Indian Hair has been hit. Back in October 2013, four women were accused of stealing expensive weaves from the store.
