Galveston County judge issues voluntary evacuation for Bolivar Peninsula

Galveston ISD cancels classes at Crenshaw

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – A voluntary evacuation of Bolivar Peninsula is underway Tuesday as Tropical Storm Cindy makes its way to land.

Galveston County Judge Mark Henry issued the voluntary evacuation for residents on the peninsula, including the unincorporated areas of Port Bolivar, Crystal Beach, High Island and Gilchrist.

“The voluntary evacuation order is intended to alert residents of Bolivar Peninsula that emergency responders may be unable to reach them,” Henry said. “Elderly residents and people with medical conditions should make plans to leave the area before dark.”

The evacuation encourages residents who rely on medical assistance or those who cannot go without power for an extended period of time to leave.

Galveston Independent School District announced Wednesday that summer school at Crenshaw will be canceled for the rest of the week.

The National Weather Service is predicting the area will receive 3-6 inches of rain combined with 4-5 feet tides and high winds.
