Chris Daniels, 29, had no reason to believe he was in danger, right up until he was.

At about 10 p.m., Davis was outside his garage smoking.

Inside the house, his mother had just stepped out of the shower when she heard gunfire. Janie Davis found her son lying in the driveway, covered with blood.

“Does he have fireworks out there? That was my first thought,” Janie said. “I walked out (and) beside his truck ... and he’s lying on the ground and he says, 'You need to call 911 I’ve been shot.'”

He told her that a man wearing a ski mask had walked up with an accomplice and demanded his wallet. When he refused to hand it over, there was a fight. Davis was shot repeatedly at point-blank range.

“I rolled him over and looked at him and I could see a couple on his side, and I could see the blood on his leg,” his mother said.

He was flown to Memorial Hermann hospital where doctors so far have removed his spleen and one of his kidneys.

They still have to rebuild one of his legs and a shattered arm.

Davis supports three small children. It’s not clear if he’ll ever be able to return to his job as a diesel mechanic.

His family has set up a YouCaring account to help with expenses.

“He doesn’t have short-term disability so there is no extra money. (The fund) it’s to help him and the kids,” his mother said.

Davis’ recovery is expected to take months.

Harris County sheriff’s detectives have video from Davis’ home security camera, but a relative said the quality is not very good.

So far, no description of the shooters has been released.
