HOUSTON – The family of a man who was shot and killed by an off-duty Houston police officer last week claims 26-year-old Jordan Baker was unarmed and only guilty of "being black and wearing a hoodie."
Community activist Quanell X spoke Monday on behalf of the family near the scene of Baker's death near the alley of strip center at the corner of Antoine and West Little York in northwest Houston.
Houston Police Department spokesperson, Kese Smith, said that Baker "put his hands in waistband, crouches down, charges the officer and tells the officer I told you I am not going to jail" during Thursday's incident.
"This man committed no crime," said Quanell X speaking of Baker. "The officer wants you to believe he rushed him with no weapon? That makes no sense."
The Houston Police Department has made no further statement regarding Baker's death. The department's Internal Affairs division and the Harris County District Attorney are investigating.
Quanell X has said that he does not trust those agencies to dole out justice.
The community activist said that he planned a peaceful protest at an unnamed Houston police substation for Tuesday where they will "bring out a casket."
