Eric Braate

Staff Meteorologist and Executive Producer

Eric Braate is a staff meteorologist and the executive producer of weather at KPRC Channel 2.

He's no stranger to Texas weather.  He began working at KPRC as a weekend meteorologist in 2007.  In 2008 he moved to Graham Media sister station WDIV-TV in Detroit as weekday morning meteorologist.  He returned to KPRC in 2011 and is thankful to be back in Houston.

Eric has had an interesting and unusual career path.  After growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  He worked for several years as an engineer for FMC Corporation and General Electric before taking a drastic turn to pursue his passion for meteorology.  On a leap of faith, he quit his job, sold his house and started graduate school at Mississippi State University. Two years later he earned a master's degree in geoscience with a focus on operational meteorology.  He hasn't looked back since.

Eric landed his first television job at WXVT-TV in Greenville, Mississippi, while still a graduate student.  After securing his degree, he went on to work at WJXT-TV in Jacksonville, Florida, and WITI-TV in Milwaukee before joining Channel 2.

When he's not working, Eric enjoys being active outside.  An avid runner and biker, he has completed over 30 marathons and many triathlons, including three full IRONMAN triathlons (a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run back-to-back!).  In 2017 he competed in the IRONMAN World Championship Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii, to raise awareness and money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  His campaign raised over $120,000.

He likes to pair his passion for running with another passion -- travel.  He has completed marathons in places large (Paris, Berlin, Rome, Vancouver, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and, of course, Houston) and small (Pocatello, Idaho, and St. George, Utah, to name two).  His goal is to eventually run a marathon in every state and every continent -- including Antarctica.  Hopefully his legs will hold up long enough to do it!

His other interests include painting, cooking, baking (his carrot cake is legendary!), reading and spending quality time with family and friends.

Eric does a mix of work in front of and behind the camera at Channel 2.  You might see him giving the weather forecast any day of the week at any time of day, depending on which shift he's filling.  He also pinch hits weekday mornings on traffic duty as needed.  He has served as a reporter and has covered community events live from the field from time to time, too.  You might consider him the ultimate utility player!

Eric is married and lives in Houston.
