Driver spins out, crashes during car club event

HOUSTON – A spinout during a monthly car show nearly turned deadly Saturday after the driver of a blue Mustang lost control and crashed into a curb, inches away from dozens of spectators.

Video of the ordeal posted to YouTube recorded the incident as the crowd ducked for cover and the driver got out of the car.

No one was hurt.

The incident occurred during Houston Coffee and Cars, a monthly car show in the parking lot of the Memorial City Mall.

"We don't condone it at all," said Tony Gonzales, one of the organizers for Houston Coffee and Cars.

"Spinning his tires. He spun and nearly hit some children," Gonzales continued.

Houston police responded quickly because Coffee and Cars has officers present at the event.

In the video, an officer can be seen controlling the crowd and attempting to keep them away from the wrecked car. Another officer can be seen with the driver, checking his identification.

Gonzales has a warning for drivers who participate "not to do burnouts, not to do high revving."

He offered a promise, as well, for spectators.

"Keep people away from the curbs and keep everybody at a safe distance from people exiting," he said.
