Deputy shoots home burglary suspect

Second suspect sparks SWAT standoff

KATY – A deputy shot a burglary suspect while another suspect barricaded himself inside a Katy home and held a SWAT team at bay for more than an hour Thursday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said they responded to a burglary alarm at a home in the 21600 block of Oak Creek Court about 8:30 a.m.

Two deputies arrived at the scene and confronted two armed men who were running out of the home, investigators said.

Deputy L. Swearingen, a 19-year veteran of the department, ended up shooting one of the men in the upper thigh. He was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover.

The second burglary suspect barricaded himself inside the home, deputies said. A SWAT team was called out to negotiate with the man.

Detectives said the man was found hiding under insulation in the home's attic. He was taken into custody.

The men are expected to face burglary charges.
