Body of missing fisherman in San Luis Pass located

SAN LUIS PASS, Texas – The body of missing fisherman Jacob Szydlowski was located Saturday night.

Crews on Friday were searching for a fisherman who went missing near the San Luis Pass Bridge.

According to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office, another fisherman located the body Saturday night just before dark and brought it to the boat ramp at Christmas Bay.

Deputies positively identified the body as Jacob Szydlowski.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a man called at 8:12 a.m. Friday and reported that he was wade-fishing on the Galveston side of the pass with Jacob Szydlowski, 19, of Alvin, when the pair got pulled underwater by strong currents. He reported that he never saw Szydlowski resurface.

Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputies assisted the Coast Guard with their search which included a helicopter, several boats, and on ground patrol. They said the teens were in water that was chest high. Deputies say the waters are known to have dangerous currents and that there are several similar incidences that happen each year.

"It takes very little as water as shallow as your knees. And as strong as this current is -- it can knock you down and can pull you under and even the most experienced and strongest swimmer and wade fisherman can become in trouble," Lt. Varon Snelgrove with the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office said.

Szydlowski was last seen wearing a black shirt and tan shorts.

Crews from Air Station Houston, Station Galveston and Galveston Island Beach Patrol had been sent to the area, according to the Coast Guard.
