Community helps fallen Bellaire officer's family

BELLAIRE, Texas – Two mothers hope to bring comfort to those grieving in the Bellaire community, and have organized a way others can help.

“Cooking is actually healing,” Tandy Camberg Harris said.

The need comes after the tragic death of police officer Marco Zarate.

“We're just trying to provide that little bit of sweet comfort that we can," Cindy Reichek said.

It was during a chase Tuesday, the officer lost his life.

“He gave that love. He went above and beyond to everybody," Harris said.

To say thank you, so far about a hundred community members have signed up to deliver three meals a day to his fellow officers and his family.

"I reflected back to what I needed when my parent died and basically what I needed was someone to come in and say don't worry about a thing, we have your back, it's covered," Harris said.

For more than a week, breakfast, dinner, lunch and dessert are covered.

"Whatever they need in their time of grief, we're here," Reichek said.

The women want to show even on the darkest days, a little bit of sweetness goes a long way.

"I'm trying not to question why, and I'm just trying to question find the silver lining," Reichek said.

Zarate's visitation service is scheduled for Sunday at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home off the I-10 Katy Freeway.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
