City of Sugar Land criticized for newly erected statue

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Sugar Land recently installed two sculptures in the Town Square's public plaza, but instead of enjoying them, people are criticizing the city for one of the statues.

According to a city of Sugar Land press release, the statues are part of a 10-piece collection donated by a Sugar Land resident to the city through its Sugar Land Legacy Foundation.

One of the most recent statues installed is a guitar player sitting on the ledge of a fountain. The other statue is of two girls taking a selfie with City Hall in the background.

"Both show activities common in the plaza," according to a press release.

People on social media are criticizing the city for the selfie statue. It has even gained some national attention appearing on the "Today" show.

"When you just wanna mess around with taxpayers' money.....," Marshall Parrott tweeted.

The City of Sugar Land responded to the tweet:

"These statues were a donation from a resident. More information here: http://www.sugarlandtx.gov/DocumentCenter/View/5565."

Tell us what you think. What do you think of the selfie statue?

"Y'all I saw the selfie statue in Sugar Land with my own eyes; it's as ridiculous as it sounds," Melinda Taylor wrote.

"This is why people hate the young generation! Stupid things like this. This is an actual new statue in sugarland town center. Good god help us," Anna Villarreal wrote.

This is an actual statue in Sugar Land Town Center. I can't.
