City council allows larger grocery stores into low-income areas

HOUSTON – Houston City Council has passed a new ordinance that will allow larger grocery stores into low-income areas.

Because of a law, stores can't sell beer or wine within a certain distance of churches or schools.

That rule kept many grocery stores out of some neighborhoods.

Now, the new city ordinance will allow full-service grocery stores to break that rule.

The stores must be 10,000 square feet or larger.
