Burglary suspects arrested outside school after chase

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – A car chase turned into a foot chase outside a Fort Bend County school on Thursday.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said someone broke into a car at 9:50 a.m. on Cinco Ranch at Commercial.

The thieves took the car owner's cellphone, investigators said.

"We were able to find them by the husband actually tracking the iPhone," Capt. Scott Scotland said. "Some type of application they have on the phone where you get the map and it tells exactly where it is. We didn't have the vehicle description. All we had was the phone moving, and they were giving us real-time info on where the phone is at that moment. The deputy was able to narrow that down in the traffic."

A deputy caught up with the suspects and a chase began.

One deputy tried to stop the vehicle by firing two shots, but that did not slow them down.

The vehicle was ditched behind the Katy Independent School District's Griffin Elementary School, 7800 South Fry Road, officials said.

The suspects tried to escape by climbing onto the roof of the school. Deputies said they talked the men into coming down. Both men were taken into custody, but one of them was taken to a hospital after complaining that he was ill or injured.

No children were inside the school.
