Mother says death of teen found in field behind Spring Branch school may be gang related

HOUSTON – Police said a teen whose family reported him missing was found dead Wednesday in a field behind a school in Spring Branch.

Police said there were no visible signs of injury on the teen's body.

Family members identify the victim as 14-year-old Mike Delfin. They said he was a student at Northbrook High School.

"I remember him as a sweet boy, a good heart. He always listened. He always tried to help others,” said Maria Sorreano, the teen’s grandmother, in Spanish. “My daughter called me to tell me that he was dead, and I don't know any details.”

The teen’s body was found about 10 a.m. in a sports field behind St. Jerome Catholic School near Hollister Road and Kempwood Drive.

A spokesperson for the school said Delfin’s mother found her son near bleachers.

"I don't know what the autopsy would say, but I think they probably beat him up or gave him something to drink," Delfin's mother Sandra Guiterrez said.

Guiterrez said she was worried this could be gang related.

She said her son was under extreme pressure to join a gang from neighborhood friends.

"He told me, 'Mom, I don't want to be in the gang. I don't want to do this either way but if I don't do it, I'm going to get killed,'" Guiterrez said.

Video from Sky 2 showed several investigators at the scene.

Police said they’re expecting the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death on Friday.
