Arrests made in hit-and-run death of construction worker

HOUSTON – Two people have been arrested and another person is on the run in the hit-and-run death of a construction worker that happened nearly two years ago.

Josue Leal, 22, is charged with murder, and Chrissie Owens, 22, is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 2015 death of Juan Cano. Both appeared in court Thursday.

A third person, 24-year-old Shayne Hawley, is also charged with murder. He has not been arrested.

Cano was working in a blocked-off construction zone in the 6100 block of the North Grand Parkway West refueling trucks around 3:20 a.m. on Nov. 3, 2015, when a black Ford Mustang, which investigators said was driven by Owens, went past the barricades and down the road Cano where was working.

Cano was robbed by the trio when Leal hit and kicked him before Owens struck and ran him over, according to court documents.

Detectives say the Mustang got stuck in mud and the car's occupants took off in Cano's fuel truck, which was found about 25 miles away.

"Because of you, I lost my husband. And my kids, they don't have a father anymore," Cano's wife, Mayela Castor, said at a February 2017 Crime Stoppers press conference.

Leal is being held without bail, while Owens is being held on $50,000 bail.
