Arrest made after gun found in school parking lot

Police arrest HISD tutor who brought loaded 9mm pistol to school

HOUSTON – Police have made an arrest at a southwest Houston middle school after someone had tipped them offthat there was a gun in the parking lot.

Houston ISD said a tutor brought a loaded 9mm pistol to the Fondren Middle School campus Friday morning. The school district said the gun was in her car at the campus off of Braeswood in southwest Houston.

The district said 29-year-old Charetta Kemp has been charged with illegally possessing a firearm, a third-degree felony.

Parents and others picking up children said it's wrong.

"I'm a little alarmed because one of the students could have gotten a hold of that gun and I think she shouldn't have brought it onto the property," said Pamela Cavalier, a parent.

"I don't think the teacher should have had a gun on the school property at all," said Nancy Gutierrez. "There's a time and a place where you should be able to have guns."

The school district has released the following statement:

A tutor at Fondren Middle School was charged Friday morning with illegally possessing a loaded 9 mm pistol in her personal vehicle that was parked on campus.

The employee, Charetta Kemp, 29, has been booked into the Harris County Jail on a third-degree felony charge. She has resigned in lieu of termination.

Student safety is HISD's top priority.
