Truck driver shot during altercation, falls off Gulf Freeway overpass and dies

All lanes of the Gulf freeway were closed as police investigated

HOUSTON – Houston police are questioning two persons of interest after the driver of an 18-wheeler was shot and killed in southeast Houston late Thursday night.

According to Houston police, a truck driver, Alex Benson, got into an altercation at the Sun Suites Extended Stay hotel in the 12400 block of the Gulf Freeway and someone opened fire.  Benson was shot, but managed to get into his truck and drive off.

Benson, 48, drove to an overpass on the Gulf Freeway near Almeda Mall, where he stopped the truck and got out.

The man tried to go for help, but fell 15 feet off the overpass and landed in a U-Turn lane.

Benson's 18-wheeler was located on the Gulf Freeway with a gunshot through its windshield.  

The two suspects are described only as one black man and one white woman who fled the hotel in a blue Dodge sedan.
