320 pounds of red snapper seized from illegal fishing boat

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – United States Coast Guard law enforcement crews caught four men illegally fishing in federal waters near South Padre Island.

Officials said the group's Lancha boat was detected Sunday afternoon illegally fishing in a United States' exclusive zone. The boat had 164 red snapper, totaling 320 pounds. The fish and Illegal fishing gear were seized. 

US Coast Guard officials said a lancha boat is typically used for illegal fishing near the U.S. /Mexico border. 

"A lancha is a Mexican fishing boat that is approximately 20-30 feet long with a slender profile, typically has one outboard motor, is capable of traveling at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour, and is frequently used to fish illegally in the United States' Exclusive Economic Zone near the U.S./Mexico border. "

The fishermen were detained.
