Wandering toddler hit by car, killed in San Leon

SAN LEON, Texas – A toddler was hit by a car and killed Monday night in the 1400 block of East Bayshore in San Leon.

According to deputies, the 2-year-old child got out of the house and ended up in middle of the street. Police said a driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting the girl but it was too late.

The driver stopped to help the toddler at a local liquor store, where he flagged down a deputy. He could be heard on the surveillance video crying "Where's the cop? Where's the cop?"

"He was pretty upset and we tried to comfort him as best we could," Norm Soucy, owner of the liquor store, said.

The sheriff found the girl lying in the road unresponsive and unconscious, investigators said.

The toddler was flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch where she died.

Officials said, the driver is cooperative and voluntarily provided a blood sample to authorities.

Investigators said the girl's mother was home at the time. The mother told deputies she placed her child in her crib for the night. She walked out of the room and went to the bathroom. She was not aware that her child was missing until the deputies knocked on her door, investigators said.

It is unclear how the child got out of the home.

No charges have been filed. Child Protective Services along with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
