Man, woman killed in 'suspicious' northwest Houston house fire

HOUSTON – Two people have died Thursday morning in a northwest Houston house fire investigators are calling suspicious.

The Houston Fire Department Arson Bureau is investigating the fire that broke out around 12:45 a.m. at a home in the 1000 block of Marjorie Street.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the back of the house and two people inside.

Gavonte Atkins, 27, suffered apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Dorothy Carter, 75, was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from apparent smoke inhalation.

Atkins acted as a caretaker for Carter, according to investigators.

Houston Police Department homicide detectives investigated all morning Thursday. They are searching for a vehicle they believe was stolen from Atkins. It is described as a 2002 blue Buick LeSabre, with Texas license plate BN6 H224.

At this time, there are no known witnesses nor suspects.

The investigation continues into the cause of the fire.
