Houston Newsmakers Jan. 17: Breast Health for women

More than 230,000 women are estimated to have died from breast cancer in 2015! The Breast Health Collaborative of Texas was created to coordinate efforts of dozens of local agencies to inform women about best practices to prevent breast cancer and to provide help to all women who may develop breast cancer.

Gretchen Walton is the Executive Director of the Breast Health Collaborative and says “We all have ways that we’re helping survivors and the newly diagnosed getting mammograms in the community. We can share those resources among the rest of the groups,” she said. “We’re there to provide support.”

Dr. Polly Niravath was co-chair of the 2014 Breast Health Summit and through her work with Baylor College of Medicine’s Lester and Sue Smith Breast Clinic, is on the forefront of research and care every day. “ It’s really about understanding what the resources in Texas are for breast cancer, ”she said. “Helping us to break down common barriers to getting care in a timely manner and getting the appropriate treatment to the right patients.”

Debbie Scanlon is the Board Chair of Susan G. Komen Houston which is in its 25th year of raising dollars for cancer research and outreach. Millions are raised each year and just as important she says is the life-saving information being dispensed to the community. “We’re trying to push them toward getting the health care they need, knowing even though they’re underserved or they’re uninsured they have places to go.”
