Back 2 School: HISD will start to send emergency text message alerts

HOUSTON – There is something new in HISD as students head back to school.

It's another tool for parents to keep up with school emergencies.

In September, the district will start sending text messages to alert parents of emergency situations at their student's school.

Each parent, and high school students, with a mobile number in the student info system will get a text message in September prompting them on how to opt into the new text message alerts.

Sheleah Reed, HISD press secretary says, "When there is a major weather crisis or even something like a school lock down, we think adding text messaging is another tool in our kind of toolbox."

The text messages will include information about campus emergencies and important district events as they happen.
