Rain is coming to Houston: Here’s our shower & storm timeline

Showers and thunderstorms are likely as we approach the second half of the week

Rain Returns

If you’ve been enjoying the mild, low-humidity stretch of weather this week, soak it in while you can.

A significant pattern change is on the way, and by the time the weekend arrives, Houstonians should be prepared for the real possibility of showers and thunderstorms — with some areas seeing heavier rainfall than others.

The Buildup Starts Mid-Week

The shift begins Wednesday, when winds turn southeasterly and start pulling in warmer, more humid air off the Gulf of Mexico.

Temperatures will climb to near 80 degrees, and while Wednesday starts out relatively dry, a few showers are possible by the afternoon.

Thursday follows a similar script — partly sunny skies, highs still around 80, but with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. This is when moisture levels really begin to ramp up across the region.

Friday Is the First Big Concern

Friday is the day to watch closely.

A 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms is currently in the forecast, making it the most likely rain day heading into the weekend.

Some areas — particularly southwest of Houston, including parts of Fort Bend and southern Brazoria County — could see heavier accumulations. Most locations should expect at least some rainfall, though widespread totals of an inch or more are not guaranteed at this point.

The Weekend Remains Uncertain — But Not Off the Hook

Saturday and Sunday carry a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms each day, with highs in the low 80s and humidity levels that will make it feel noticeably muggy.

While the most likely scenario for both days involves only scattered, light activity, forecasters are keeping a close eye on the possibility of more widespread showers — particularly on Saturday. There is enough atmospheric moisture in place that if conditions come together, rainfall could be more significant than the current probabilities suggest.

What You Should Do Now

The full picture of this weekend’s rain potential won’t become clear until we get closer to Friday, so it’s worth checking forecasts daily as the week goes on.

If you have outdoor plans — a graduation party, a sporting event, or yard work — have a backup plan ready, especially for Saturday. Those in flood-prone areas or low-lying neighborhoods should stay alert as the weekend approaches.

The bottom line: Houston is heading into a wet stretch. It may not be a washout, but the chances of getting caught in the rain are real enough that a little preparation now goes a long way.
