Thursday’s Forecast:
January is supposed to be our coldest month, but a high-pressure system is kicking off 2026 with another chance for record-breaking heat not only today but Friday as well.
This surge in heat is driven by two elements in our atmosphere. First, an upper-level ridge of high pressure near Mexico is influencing us. Second, steady southerly and southwesterly winds are also warming us up. It goes without saying that this warmth is unusual for this time of year.
there will be hit and miss chances for showers Thursday ahead of Friday’s cold front.
Next cold front is Friday:
From the 80s to the 50s: We’re tracking a 22-degree temperature drop over the next 5 days thanks to our next front. Temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-60s for afternoon highs and the 40s during early mornings - which is seasonable for January.
Severe Weather Threat:
Not only will the upcoming cold front cause a dramatic drop of 20+ degrees across the region, but we’re actively tracking an increasing low but potential for severe weather. We’ll watch for the chance for isolated storms Friday afternoon into the evening both ahead and along the front.
Right now, the areas in green show a severe storm risk 1/5: Strong wind gust, thunderstorms and large hail are all a possibility.
Weekend Forecast:
If you’re running or watching the Chevron Houston Marathon, the forecast looks close to ideal. Sunday morning temperatures will start between 42 and 46 degrees, with mostly clear skies and a light north wind around 5 mph. This is a near perfect forecast for runners. The rest of marathon day should bring a slight warm-up to the upper 50s by lunchtime with continued light winds.
Looking back, previous years have brought much colder, windier, or even rainy conditions to the city during marathon weekend, so this forecast stands out as runner friendly.
Your Extended Forecast:
We’ll continue to track the chance for record-breaking heat, then our front will drop us into seasonable temperatures for January.
