The Chevron Houston Marathon: On your mark, get set, go! Or, depending on where you live, maybe that’s a “no go” for driving plans. According to the Houston Marathon Committee, more than 300,000 folks put on their tennis shoes to support, run, and cheer, raising funds for over 60 local charities last year.
Neighborhoods like downtown, Midtown, Memorial Park, Montrose, and River Oaks will feel the biggest impact, with widespread road closures and crowds all weekend.
The race starts on Congress Avenue at Fannin Street and ends at Lamar and Crawford, the 26.2-mile full course will have dozens of road closures.
The course winds through dozens of streets, so expect widespread disruptions, check out METRO options or plan extra time if you’re heading out.
From the weather to the roads, we have you covered:
You’ll want to make sure you’re layered up. Thanks to Friday’s front, we’re waking up in the 40s with a high in the upper 50s which is a big difference from how we started the week with record-breaking temperatures in the 80s.
Plan ahead for traffic:
Expect heavy congestion, rolling closures, full street shutdowns, construction delays, and limited parking throughout the weekend, especially Sunday morning starting around 5:30–6 a.m.
In fact, the Houston Marathon Road Closure list is 13 pages long, so with that being said here are some of the major roadways that will be closed or partially closed for the marathon: Washington Avenue, Kirby Drive, Memorial Drive, Allen Parkway and Avenida de las Americas are a few of the major roads impacted.
We’re also tracking several freeway closures:
Freeway closures: Friday 9 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m.
- 59/69 Southbound to SH-288
- 59/69 Northbound from SH-288 to Alabama Street
Ramp closures for Race Day: 6 a.m.
- 610 West Loop southbound exit to Hidalgo/Richmond
- 69 Southbound exit to Newcastle
