Friday’s forecast:

We’re kicking off the new year with record warm temperatures. Houston could tie or even break a record high on Friday. The standing record is 80° set back in 2000, and I’m forecasting a high of 82°.

There are two main reasons for the warmth. First, there’s a strong area of high pressure in the upper-levels of the atmosphere over Mexico, which is building a ridge of much warmer-than-normal air across Texas. Second, our winds will be coming in from the southwest at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to around 25 mph. That southwest flow is warm and dry, and it’s very efficient at boosting our temperatures this time of year.

A weak Pacific cold front will move through southeast Texas early Saturday, knocking temperatures down a bit for the rest of the weekend. Even with that cooldown, we’ll still be running above average for early January.

Below are the typical January averages and the historical extremes for this time of year.

Your Extended Forecast:

After Sunday’s cool down, temperatures climb again. We’ll hover in the upper 70s to lower 80s starting Tuesday and lasting through our next weekend. Houston’s next chance of rain is Thursday of next week.
