So, what’s the science behind an ozone day?

What is it?

The easiest way to understand it: Ozone is great for blocking UV rays up high, but when it’s down at the surface, it messes with our air, health, and nature. Ozone is a molecule with three oxygen atoms (O3) that shields us from UV rays in the stratosphere. But at ground level, it’s a pollutant—a gas made when sunlight mixes with pollution from cars, factories, and chemicals. It’s a byproduct of human activity, not a natural part of the air we’re meant to breathe. We aren’t supposed to have it piling up down here.

Why it’s bad?

  • Breathing Trouble: It’s like invisible smoke. It irritates your lungs, making it harder to breathe—especially if you’re a kid, elderly, or have asthma, putting you in that vulnerable group.
  • Hurts Plants: Ozone sneaks into leaves and weakens crops or trees, basically making them sick.
  • Wear & Tear: It slowly breaks down stuff like rubber or paint over time.
