Our forecast is dry and hot through Saturday. Rain chances ramp back up Sunday after 4:00 PM. It starts light but will pick up in intensity Monday.
Our first tropical storm of the year?
The chances of a tropical disturbance or tropical storm forming next week have gone up. There is now a 40% chance tropical moisture moving into the Gulf of Mexico this weekend gets organized and becomes our first tropical system of the year. Did you know this is the latest start to the hurricane season since 2014? July 1, 2014 hurricane Arthur formed. Since 2014 most of our named storms formed in May or at the latest, early June. We will not take a direct hit from this system but Mexico will get flooding rain. Most of eastern Mexico is in a terrible drought and this system will be a drought buster.
How this system affects SE Texas:
We are on the outer edge of this tropical system. This means a few things. First, our impacts can be wide ranging depending how strong this storm becomes in the Gulf. I’ve seen systems like this get stronger than forecast and take all of the tropical rains and move it closer to its center. This leaves us with very little rain. I’ve also seen outer rain bands from a storm in the Bay of Campeche reach us and bring a line of training storms that creates flooding. These are two extreme examples. If we take away the extremes I expect around 2″ of rain in Houston, 4″-6″ along our coastal cities. We have a chance of street flooding from this tropical moisture. And we’ll get gusty winds around 30mph.
10-Day Forecast:
Lots of happenings on this 10-day forecast. Flag day is incredibly hot. Most of Father’s day looks dry but our first wave of rain may arrive at night. Juneteenth may be stormy along with the first day of summer Thursday.
