Otto becomes hurricane off Central American coast

HOUSTON – A late-season tropical storm strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday afternoon off the coast of Central America.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Otto was located about 235 miles east of Costa Rica and had winds of 75 mph. The storm was moving west at 2 mph.

Otto is forecast to make landfall Thursday morning near the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua with winds of near 90 mph.

Hurricane watches were issued for the southern coastline of Nicaragua, all of the Costa Rica coast and the northern coast of Panama.

Otto is the seventh hurricane of the Atlantic season.

The storm will not have an impact on Houston’s weather.
