East Houston residents cleaning up after weekend flooding

HOUSTON – Residents in an east Houston subdivision are still picking up the pieces left behind after strong winds blew through over the weekend.

Fences toppled and roofs were ripped off houses. Floodwaters forced some people to throw out nearly all of their belongings.

"A lot of carpet, sofa, big shelves, computer shelves, stuff of that nature. Shoes," said Charles Eastmond. "Lost a lot of stuff. Just stressful. Tired of it."

Many families had anywhere from 3 to 5 feet of water inside their homes.

A lot of people tried to save what they could in the storm's aftermath on Saturday, pushing through several feet of water in the streets. Some even left their homes in boats.

Mary Jane Medrano told KPRC 2 she comes out to this area to help her friends and family clean up every time their homes flood.

This time, she said the floodwaters made her friend Linda's house completely uninhabitable.

"It's very sad. It's very awful. It's like an abandoned house," she said. "The smell is very awful because of the floods that we get here and the sewer and all that."

Volunteers with the Red Cross came through the Woodshadows Subdivision on Monday to help residents with cleanup efforts.
