NORTHWEST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Lightning started two fires in the northwest side of the Houston-area Saturday night.
A home and an apartment complex were hit by lightning while people were sleeping inside, officials said.
Firefighters said a woman and her dog had to leave their home after the fire started in a detached garage.
According to the Cy-Fair Fire Department, lightning bounced off a large oak tree and hit the garage at Possum Hollow and Woodedge about 11:45 p.m.
The garage and the car inside it caught fire. Fire crews were able to cut the fire off as it started to spread through the breezeway and into the house.
No injuries were reported. The car and garage were a total loss.
Lightning also hit an apartment complex on Barker Cypress and Morton about midnight, starting a fire in the attic, according to authorities.
Firefighters said the lightning struck the roof the three-story Landmark apartment. The Westlake, Cy-Fair and Houston fire departments all responded and put the fire out quickly.
One apartment had smoke damage and the two apartment below it had water damage.
No one was hurt.
