Galveston emergency officials preparing for more rain along coast

DICKINSON, Texas – Downpours caused roads to flood in parts of Galveston County on Saturday.

With a tropical disturbance developing in the Gulf, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management is monitoring the situation.

"We're kind of at the short end of the stick with the county," Galveston County emergency management coordinator Garret Foskit said.

For an area that's been struggling to stay above water recently, now there's more potential wild weather to worry about.

"Anything in the Gulf causes us to be concerned, so we're going to be over here with the National Weather Service tomorrow (Sunday) morning to get a heads up about what else is going on."

Hughes Road Elementary School in Dickinson was almost underwater after about seven inches of rain fell.

Maggie Hinojosa's home was damaged by the water. She said she hasn't seen such conditions since Hurricane Ike.

"It was up to the third step in our house," Hinojosa said.

But she is not letting it stop her from having a good time. She relocated a party planned for Saturday afternoon to a nearby park.

"We literally had to cancel everything and bring it over here because there was no way the people were going to be able to get in," she said.

There were clear skies for the rest of Saturday, but Galveston County could have another round of storms tomorrow.
