Surfer Saves Swimmer Caught in Rip Current at New Jersey Beach -- Storyful

Surfer Saves Swimmer Caught in Rip Current at New Jersey Beach A surfer rescued a swimmer from a strong rip current at Long Beach Island, New Jersey, on Sunday, September 3, capturing the dramatic intervention on camera as he did so. Footage from surfer Steve Houser shows the moment he rescued Gabe McCabe, who was struggling in the water after being dragged out. Houser said that he was “happy to be in the right place at the right time.” “Such an unfortunate situation but so glad to have made a lifelong friend in the end! When you think you can’t help, most likely, you can,” Houser said. Speaking after the incident, McCabe said, “Before I realized what happened, I was about 20 yards further out … out of my depth, just in the space of a couple of seconds.” McCabe said he “was in trouble” and that “without a doubt” Houser had saved his life. Over Labor Day weekend, two swimmers drowned and another was presumed dead after rip currents created dangerous conditions in New Jersey, according to local reports. On Wednesday morning, a body was found washed up on a beach in Seaside Park, local reports said. It was as yet unconfirmed if this was the same swimmer who went missing over the weekend.
