High Tides Cause Flooding in Northwest Florida as Idalia Makes Landfall Surging seas triggered severe flooding in western Florida on Wednesday, August 30, as Hurricane Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach, around where the panhandle meets the peninsula. This footage posted by Cedar Key Fire Rescue shows flooded conditions brought on by high tide in the island city off the northwest coast of Florida. The Category 3 hurricane was packing winds of up to 110 mph, bringing “catastrophic storm surge and damaging winds” to the state’s Big Bend region, according to the National Hurricane Center.
