New treatment may soon take some pain out of treating cervical cancer
KPRC2Thousands of women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. Currently, doctors pack the vaginal cavity with gauze to isolate the tumor before doing radiation treatment. But a new biomedical gel that's under development could greatly reduce pain for patients during treatments. The project is a partnership between Virginia Tech, where work is done in the lab, and the University of Virginia Cancer Center, where patients go for treatment. "When you're treating gynecological cancers or cervical cancer, you're introducing packing material to help protect healthy tissue around the tumor," said Tim Long, the director of VT Macro Molecules Innovation Institute, who is overseeing the research at Tech.

New Zealand's largest gun show was canceled in March after a gunman killed 51 people at two Christchurch mosques. Gun shows were also canceled in Las Vegas after the 2017 shooting at the Route 91 music festival.

HUMBLE, Texas โ Humble Independent School District officials have decided to replace football helmets that received a low score in newly released helmet safety rankings, Local 2 Investigates has learned. Some of HISD's players used the Riddell VSR4, which received only one out of five stars in Virginia Tech's football safety rating system. The helmets being replaced account for 10 percent of the district's total helmets. The new helmet rankings were released in May. Waller ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Klein ISD and Conroe ISD also used lower-ranked helmets, according to those districts and open records requests filed by Local 2 investigative reporter Jace Larson.
