In a test of Texas’ new CROWN Act, which prohibits discrimination based on hairstyles, a judge ruled that the Barbers Hill school district can enforce a ban on certain male hairstyles.

At least 10 other Democrats — including state Rep. Julie Johnson, D-Farmers Branch — are running for Allred’s solidly Democratic seat as he vies for U.S. Senate.

Gov. Greg Abbott over the weekend signed into law a bill prohibiting race-based hair discrimination in Texas workplaces, schools and housing policies. It goes into effect in September.

The CROWN Act would ensure protection for Texans who wear their hair in natural styles such as braids, locs, twists or knots.
