As temperatures begin to rise across the Houston area, the City of Houston is preparing to kick off the 2026 swim season with the early opening of several public pools later this month.

Options for where to swim in Houston are limited, due to a nationwide shortage of lifeguards.

Nearly 3 months after Aliyah died, a Houston Health Department spokesperson says the pool remains closed but that's because “The operator hasn’t submitted plans to remodel the pool." He adds, "Our department would need to review and approve the plans before the operator can even begin the pool repairs.”

“The first day we go to the pool this summer, this happens,” Anthony Garza said. Garza spent his Wednesday afternoon at the Clayton Community Pool in Alief with his nephews. He told KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel, the pool was calm, and several people were swimming.

The recent storm did not do the Houston Parks & Recreation Department any favors. A handful of public pools were damaged in the storm.

(CNN) – An 8-year-old girl, her mother and grandfather found dead in the pool of their New Jersey home died as a result of accidental drowning, the medical examiner's office said Tuesday. The manner of death was accidental and the result of drowning, the county Medical Examiner's Office said Tuesday. Monday afternoon, police received a call from a neighbor who heard screaming, police Lt. Frank Sutter told CNN. There was another family member living in the house, but authorities didn’t say how that person was related to the victims.
