She said the volcano's lava dome is growing rapidly, causing hot lava and gas clouds to flow down its slopes. It is the most active of dozens of Indonesian volcanoes and has repeatedly erupted with lava and gas clouds recently.

Light eruptions continued during the day โ one sending a column of hot clouds rising 200 meters (yards) into the air. The geological authority had raised the alert level of Mount Merapi to the second-highest level in November after sensors picked up increasing activity.

On Thursday, Indonesia's geological agency raised Merapiโs alert level to the second-highest level after sensors picked up increased activity. The 2,968-meter (9,737-foot) mountain is about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Yogyakarta city center. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people and caused the evacuation of 20,000 villagers.

About a quarter million people live within a 10-kilometer (6-mile) radius of the volcano, according to authorities in surrounding districts.
