NBC sets November return for 'This Is Us,' 'Chicago' dramas

LOS ANGELES An optimistic NBC said Thursday it will bring This Is Us and other scripted series back in November despite the TV industry's coronavirus-caused production shutdown that's only beginning to ease. Broadcast TV's usual robust September start to the new season has already bowed to the pandemic, with NBC and other networks relying heavily on reality and acquired series that month. This Is Us, the family drama starring Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia, will kick off its fifth season on Nov. 10, the network said. That will be followed by the Nov. 11 return of the Chicago drama franchise: Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med.The Mariska Hargitay-led Law & Order: SVU will start its record-building 22nd season on Nov. 12, followed by The Blacklist," starring James Spader and Megan Boone, on Nov. 13. Connecting, a new comedy about friends using video chats to remain bonded despite pandemic isolation, will debut Oct. 1.

While Mandy Moore has been Milo Ventimiglia's scene partner for the last four years on This Is Us, she recently got the chance to work with him in his role as a director, and she was wildly impressed. Ventimiglia stepped behind the camera to help the recent episode "Storybook Love," which aired on Oct. 22, and Moore gushed over his work and the episode itself. "My goal was to serve the actors, serve the story, serve the crew," Ventimiglia said with a humble shrug. However, when scenes get particularly heavy, Moore and Ventimiglia agreed that they had one serious go-to solution to help get into a better headspace. "There's the work, and then there's time with your friends, and your time with the crew," Ventimiglia shared.

The This Is Us star will say goodbye (temporarily) to Jack Pearson and take on the legendary daredevil, Evel Knievel, in a new USA Network limited series, the network announced Thursday. In Evel, Ventimiglia will take on the 1970s icon as he prepares for his greatest death-defying feat, the historic Snake River Canyon jump. USA Network is known for big event series that celebrate heroes, rebels and icons, and what could be bigger than the story of one of the greatest thrill seekers of all time?, said Chris McCumber, President of Entertainment Networks at USA Network and Syfy. The 42-year-old actor currently plays the patriarch of the Pearson family on NBC's Emmy-nominated family drama, This Is Us.

'The Art of Racing in the Rain' celebrates people's love for dogs

In the new movie "The Art of Racing in the Rain," Milo Ventimiglia plays a race car driver who adopts a dog he names Enzo after legendary car maker Enzo Ferrari. "It just kind of all ties together, this perfect mix of love and hope and the hard times and everything you just experience in life," said Ventimiglia. "The film is about life - and sometimes life is difficult and messy, joyous and sad. "There was just a bit of magic that was happening on set and I think that shows on screen. ""The Art of Racing in the Rain" is rated PG and is in theaters Friday, Aug. 9.

Forget to Botox and you're playing someone's grandmother. Milo Ventimiglia says he got a taste of ageism himself when he admitted that he wanted to play Batman, but producers thought he was too old. According to Ventimiglia, he asked his agents to seriously look into the possibility of playing the role, saying, "I've always wanted to be Batman." For the record, Michael Keaton was 38 when he played Batman in 1989. Ben Affleck was the oldest of all, playing Batman at 44.
