“Country” Joe McDonald, a hippie rock star of the 1960s whose “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag” was a four-lettered rebuke to the Vietnam War that became an anthem for protesters and a highlight of the Woodstock music festival, died Sunday at 84.

The effort to reduce the Harris County jail population gained new urgency Thursday after a juvenile offender tested positive for the coronavirus. As a result, the Harris County Juvenile detention center is no longer accepting new prisoners. At the same time, the plan to reduce the adult inmate population is on hold due to a conflict between county and state officials. Over the last week, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office managed to reduce the inmate population at three county jails by 8,500 to 8,000 inmates. But a broader plan to reduce the inmate population is being held up by conflict.
