As Texans endured days in the dark, the state failed to deliver vital emergency information
Greg Abbott spoke at a Saturday press conference regarding Texas’ emergency response to a winter storm gripping Texas. Greg Abbott told residents Wednesday to search for emergency warming shelters on Google and to call 311 for additional assistance. When the power went out, the state suddenly lost the ability to provide essential information to people desperately in need of help. AdBut according to residents and lawmakers around the state, TDEM failed to provide such emergency alerts during this crisis, effectively leaving Texans without the kind of information necessary for living through a disaster. The electric grid failed, the communication system failed and Texans say they feel abandoned by their government.

Texas Republican asks state to rename several of the state’s prisons honoring slave owners
State Rep. James White, R-Hillister, is asking the state to change the names of its prisons that honor slave owners and those tied to convict leasing. State Rep. James White said Friday he is asking the Texas Board of Criminal Justice to rename several prisons and, in an interview with The Texas Tribune, specifically named the Darrington, Goree and Eastham prisons. AdThere are 99 state prisons and jails in the state, at least several more of which are named after people with racist and sometimes violent histories, according to The Marshall Project. AdThomas Goree, the namesake of a Huntsville prison, was a former slave owner and Confederate captain who became one of the first superintendents of a Texas prison, The Marshall Project reported. He was closely tied to the convict leasing program that killed thousands in Texas.

After a year of racial reckoning, Black lawmakers believe they can finally eliminate Confederate Heroes Day in Texas
For years, a handful of Texas lawmakers have tried in vain to pass legislation that would remove or replace the holiday celebrating leaders of the Confederate army. The birthdays of Lee and Davis used to be separate Texas holidays, but lawmakers consolidated them in 1973 to create Confederate Heroes Day. State Rep. Jarvis Johnson, D-Houston, filed one of two bills for this session attempting to remove the holiday from the state’s calendar. State Rep. Shawn Thierry, D-Houston, filed the other in support. He plans to hold a press conference with Collier and other representatives at noon on the state holiday.

He was steady early, but had back-to-back interceptions in the fourth quarter to let the Patriots back into the game. It was the first game back for Newton, who returned after missing New England’s Week 4 loss at Kansas City. McManus, who connected on field goals of 52 and 54 yards, now has six games with multiple 50-yard field goals.

NFL rallies around Patriots' White after father's death
– Patriots running back James White says he is having trouble processing the sudden death of his father, but is finding comfort in celebrating his son's first birthday. Seahawks stuff Newton on final play, beat Patriots 35-30
Collier stuffed Cam Newton at the 1-yard line on the final play, and the Seattle Seahawks held off the New England Patriots 35-30 on Sunday night. But Newton took over the final minutes and yet another Seahawks-Patriots matchup was decided in the closing moments on a play snapped at the 1. On the final play, Newton tried to run power to the left, but was upended by Collier in the biggest play of his young career. The entire night in a normal setting would have left CenturyLink Field shaking with delirium, especially after the final play. Newton found Harry but was stopped at the 1 and New England used its final timeout, setting the stage for the final play.

Belichick: Playing multiple QBs an option this season
Bill Belichick said he's open to using a two-quarterback system this season, another example of how radically different the New England Patriots could look after Tom Brady's departure. The longtime coach acknowledged he was considering the possibility, and the Patriots later used all three of their QBs during a single scrimmage series. Hoyer has the most experience in the Patriots offense. Stidham has youth and potential, having beaten out Hoyer as a rookie last season to be Bradys No. Belichick said using multiple quarterbacks could lend itself to different formations.

Black lawmakers say virus requests unanswered in Texas
DALLAS – Three months into the coronavirus outbreak in Texas, black lawmakers say Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and state health officials have fallen short in addressing their pleas for better racial data and efforts to decrease COVD-19's decidedly deadly toll on black Americans. Texas has struggled to track racial health disparities. But with so much of that data completed as “unknown,” the actual number of black cases could be much higher than the state’s. Rep. James White, the only black Republican in the Legislature, said collecting racial data is necessary to respond to the pandemic.
