George C. Wolfe, Anne Carson win PEN achievement awards

With โMankโ and โThe Crown,โ Netflix dominates Globes noms

Netflix, which topped all studios at the Globes last year, too, led with a commanding 42 nominations, with 22 coming in film categories and 20 in television. 'Never Rarely' tops Spirit Awards, 'Da 5 Bloods' leads NBRs
The film was nominated for seven Independent Film Spirit Awards including one for best feature. The 36th annual Spirit Awards, like most awards shows during the pandemic, are adjusting to the difficult circumstances. Eliza Hittman's โNever Rarely Sometimes Always,โ a Pennsylvania's teen's odyssey in getting an abortion, racked up nominations for best feature film, best director and best female lead for Sidney Flanigan. Chloe Zhoe's โNomadland,โ starring Frances McDormand, scored five nods, including best feature, best director and best female lead for McDormand. None of the nominees for best feature film were directed by a white male.
In 'Ma Rainey,' channeling the blues of August Wilson
Following โFencesโ and โMa Rainey,โ he intends to continue adapting Wilsonโs famed American Century Cycle, a 10-play series spanning each decade of the 20th century. All of Wilson's plays hum with the sorrowful beauty of the blues but โMa Rainey" is soaked through. On a sweaty, summer day, a band has gathered at a white-owned recording studio to cut a new record with Ma Rainey (Davis), the pioneering โMother of the Blues,โ and an unapologetically liberated woman from the South. Itโs Cutler and Slow Drag and Ma Rainey talking," says Wolfe. For Davis, Ma isn't a character she wants to let go of, or stop admiring.

MOVIESโ โMa Raineyโs Black Bottomโ was always going to be an event picture, even on Netflix, where it will be available Friday. Wilsonโs 1982 play is set around a recording session in 1920s Chicago as a blues band awaits the arrival of Ma Rainey (Davis). โ AP Film Writer Lindsey BahrMUSICโ Paul McCartney will release the final album in a trilogy of classics on Friday. โMcCartney IIIโ comes 40 years after 1980โs โMcCartney IIโ and 50 years after โMcCartney,โ his solo debut released in 1970. โ Director George C. Wolfe said that when he signed on to direct โMa Raineyโs Black Bottom,โ he instantly knew he wanted to work with Branford Marsalis.
With red carpets rolled up, the Oscar race goes virtual
Hollywoods awards season has gone virtual. For Awards Daily founder Sasha Stone, who has been covering the Oscars since 2000, itโs like nothing sheโs ever seen โ an awards season without glamour, without red carpets, without anything that feels real. And awards season, such as it is, has gone virtual. The Oscar race will Zoomed. Not everyone is sorry that awards season โ an increasingly bloated, overlong, high-priced slog from September to February โ has been turned upside down.

Boseman plays Levee, an ambitious trumpeter aiming to launch himself with his own updated versions of Ma Rainey's songs. โMa Raineyโs Black Bottomโ was the first play Wilson wrote in 1984, and the only one of this 10-part Century Cycle not set in Pittsburgh.
