The Boston Marathon was back to a full field and back in the spring for the first time since 2019, and fans along the course threw a coming-out party for a region recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prestigious race is returning to its springtime spot for the first time since the pandemic began, after a cancelation in 2020 and a postponement to the fall in 2021.

COVID-19 had canceled the 2020 running and postponed the 2021 race until the fall, when the marathon returned with restrictions.

Reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Boston Marathon women’s division by winning a see-saw sprint down Boylston Street.

The sun was shining on much of the East Coast on Sunday, a day after a vicious nor’easter brought blizzard conditions to many areas, and left more than 100,000 customers without power.

Parts of 10 states and some major population centers were in the path of the storm, which was expected to rage throughout the day Saturday.

Boston Marathon organizers say the 2022 race won't return to the pre-pandemic full field size of more than 30,000 runners.

The Red Sox made the announcement at 9 a.m., about five hours before the scheduled first pitch. “The decision to postpone our first game of the season was not made lightly,” Red Sox President Sam Kennedy said.
