With Janet Jackson resplendent in a black trouser suit on his front row and humongous hats on many of his models, Christian Siriano opened New York Fashion Week at the former townhouse of Elizabeth Taylor, rolling out sexy, slinky looks Wednesday to go with his trademark ballgowns. Christian Siriano's latest show part matrix, bygone times

Christian Siriano's New York Fashion Week runway Saturday was part space age, part centuries gone by and part in the moment with a special guest: Social media's star Italian greyhound Iggy the Tika. In the bowels of the Empire State Building, on a bare concrete floor, Siriano rolled out his huge, signature ballgowns in a variety of colors and textures, including one in a gray tweed with a huge hood and another in shiny, steel blue with sleeves that formed spikes worthy of the Jetsons.

Christian Siriano offers mountain glam for 2nd pandemic show

Model Coco Rocha walks the runway at the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2021 at Gotham Hall during New York Fashion Week on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, in New York. It was a dreamy, color-saturated show during a tough time for fashion inspiration, Siriano said. While most designers have gone fully digital during an expanded New York Fashion Week that has stretched the traditional calendar, Siriano remains committed to the runway. Hopefully it will show people we can do this in fashion,โ€ Siriano said of the growing reuse movement. โ€œHonestly, I don't know," Siriano said, "because I love doing this but it's very hard to do in a pandemic.

Truth is, people turned to culture of all kinds in 2020 โ€” highbrow and lowbrow โ€” to satisfy varied and sometimes conflicting needs: Distraction, inspiration, consolation, escapism, hope. A Broadway star serenaded health workers from his apartment window, and ballet dancers performed โ€œSwan Lakeโ€ from their bathtubs. The world mourns an actor of immense talent who, like many of his characters, radiated a regal sense of dignity.

With picnic baskets, Christian Siriano puts on backyard show

For the rest of the fashion industry, Siriano livestreamed the show on a sunny, mild day, with his garden as backdrop and his grass as runway. It was a rare New York Fashion Week show to include physical guests, something he said both he and his clothes sorely required. His comic books became gray and black cartoon panes on a trouser and jacket set. Gone this fashion week were the hordes of celebrities and influencers usually seated on front rows. The designer and โ€œPoseโ€ star bonded at last year's Academy Awards when Porter took to the red carpet in a huge tuxedo gown Siriano designed.

But this is really, really seismic.
