For much of the 20th century the Automat was a destination restaurant โ€“ a gleaming, coin-operated self-service eatery, whose chrome doors opened to reveal comfort foods to match Mom's cooking. Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with Lisa Hurwitz, director of a nostalgic new documentary about Horn & Hardart's chain of cafeterias; and with Broadway star Chita Rivera, who fondly remembers her days as a dance student, when the Automat was a home away from home.

Broadway stars and drag queens to unite for voter drive show

NEW YORK โ€“ Broadway and the world of drag will combine later this month for a streaming variety show to promote voter participation that promises plenty of show tunes and a lot of fierce lipstick. โ€œDivas For Democracy: United We Slayโ€ will feature Broadway stars such as Chita Rivera and Stephanie J. Block singing theater songs while their drag counterparts from โ€œRuPaulโ€™s Drag Raceโ€ โ€œmatch their vocal prowess with lip sync passion and style,โ€ according to organizers. There's a minimum $5 donation and all proceeds benefit Drag Out the Vote, a national, nonpartisan voter engagement nonprofit. The divas of drag include stars of โ€œRuPaulโ€™s Drag Raceโ€ such as Alaska, Jinkx Monsoon, Jujubee, Valentina, Peppermint, Cynthia Lee Fontaine, Shuga Cain, Honey Davenport, Brita Filter, Marti Gould Cummings and Pixie Aventura.

Rivera, Estefan, Miranda to star in digital benefit show

NEW YORK Chita Rivera, Gloria Estefan, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thala will headline a benefit digital concert in October to celebrate Latino culture and achievement in theater. Hear Our Voices will be held online Oct. 1 and will be hosted by Andra Burns. It's going to pay attention to the present and look to the future, said Trujillo, who said the themes will explore Latin representation, inclusion and diversity. Additional attendees include Lucie Arnaz, Melissa Barrera, Jaime Camil, Florencia Cuenca, Ral Esparza, Mandy Gonzalez, Ral Gonzalez, Ivan Hernandez, Ariana DeBose, Mauricio Martinez, Bianca Marroqun, Shereen Pimentel, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Philippa Stefani, Anglica Vale, Robin de Jesus and Ana Villafae. The concert will be broadcast on Playbill.com, Playbills YouTube Channel and on The Broadway Leagues Viva.Broadway website.
