FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas — When many parents think about child trafficking, they often imagine it happening somewhere else. But child advocates warn that trafficking can occur in any community and frequently begins online, making prevention and awareness critical.

As Houston prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for major events like the FIFA World Cup, child safety advocates are encouraging parents to start important conversations now about protecting children both online and in public spaces.

Montgomery County detectives found a missing minor and arrested two Houston women, Norma Lewis and Niasia Harrell, for child trafficking. The investigation led to the discovery of online advertisements featuring the minor, prompting a meeting at a local hotel where the suspects were apprehended. The women were charged with a first-degree felony, and the minor received care before being reunited with their parents.

A pimp who forced a 15-year-old girl to have sex with strangers for money and also victimized a 13-year-old girl has been sentenced to 28 years in prison, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Wednesday.
