Texans’ annual local prospect day includes Kyron Drones, EJ Smith, Emmitt Smith’s son, Tyren Montgomery, Kam Dewberry

HOUSTON – The Texans held their annual local prospect day Friday morning with players meeting coach DeMeco Ryans and other staff members.

The meeting, testing and medical exams included strong-armed Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones.

The Baylor transfer passed for 1,919 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season with 644 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Drones is a former Shadow Creek standout. He passed for 5,257 yards and 71 touchdowns and rushed for 1,300 yards and 23 touchdowns. Drones (6-foot-2, 232 pounds) finished his collegiate career with 5,785 yards, 45 touchdowns and 19 interceptions and rushed for 1,847 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He passed for 2,085 yards, 17 touchdowns and three interceptions with 818 rushing yards and five scores in his first season for the Hokies after playing in seven games in two season for Baylor.

Drones’ cousin through marriage is Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward.

The Texans hosted Texas A&M running back EJ Smith, the son of Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith.

Smith, a Stanford transfer who ran for 87 yards and a touchdown on his first carry of the 2022 season, rushed for 205 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Aggies. He scored nine career touchdowns.

John Carroll University record-setting All-American wide receiver Tyren Montgomery, a Woodlands College Park graduate who didn’t play organized football in high school as he concentrated on basketball, attended the session. Montgomery excelled in the Senior Bowl and American Bowl all-star games. Montgomery broke Texans special teams coordinator Frank Ross’ receiving records at John Carroll.

Montgomery, who previously attended LSU and the University of Houston before his first season of organized football at Nicholls State, caught 119 passes for 1,528 yards and 15 touchdowns last season for John Carroll. He caught 57 passes for 1,071 yards and 17 touchdowns two seasons ago.

The Texans brought in Alabama offensive lineman Kam Dewberry, a former Texas A&M blue chip recruit from Atascosita. Dewberry (6-foot-4, 332 pounds) started 13 games at left guard last season for the Crimson Tide. At Texas A&M, he played in 32 games. He was ranked the ninth overall recruit in Texas as a senior and fifth among interior lnmen nationally and was an Under Armour All-American.

Rice cornerback Omari Porter (6-2, 198), a Stanford transfer who started every game at corner last season and recorded a career-high 36 tackles with eight pass deflections, participated in the local day.

University of Houston wide receiver Stephon Johnson, an Oklahoma State transfer, participated. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior caught 13 passes for 275 yards and two touchdown last season. He caught a 74-yard touchdown against Rice.

Shad Banks Jr., a Texas-San Antonio linebacker and TCU transfer who excelled in the East-West Shrine Bowl and ran a 4.6 at his Pro Day, is a North Shore graduate and former Texas A&M recruit. Banks led UTSA with 94 tackles last season and was named a team captain.

University of Florida starting right guard Damieon George Jr., a 6-foot-6, 354-pound transfer from Alabama, was another attendee. George, an SEC academic honor roll member, started every game at right guard last season for the Gators. He had a 70.2 pass blocking grade. George participated in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ local prospect day. He won three state titles at North Shore and was a four-star recruit for Alabama.

The Texans met with Furman safety Taylen Blaylock, an Atascosita graduate. A 5-foot-10, 203-pound Lindenwood transfer who began his career at Sam Houston State as a starter as a freshman, Blaylock is the son of former NFL running back Derrick Blaylock. He intercepted two passes last season, returning one for a touchdown, and had 45 tackles, 4 1/2 for losses.

In high school, Blaylock was an all-district selection and two-time special teams district Most Valuable Player. He had five career interceptions and seven career return touchdowns on punts and kickoffs.

Ohio State kicker Jayden Fielding, a League City native who attended Clear Creek before transferring to the IMG Academy, participated in the workout. He made the game-winning field goal for the Buckeyes in the 2025 national championship game victory over Notre Dame. A second-team All-Big Ten selection, Fielding made 16 of 20 field goals last season and all 56 extra points. He hit 13 of 17 field goals two seasons ago and 16 of 20 kicks three years ago.

Stanford cornerback and team captain Collin Wright (6-foot, 195, Missouri City) participated. He started every game for the Cardinal last season, with 33 tackles and an interception returned for a touchdown. As a junior, he started at corner and nickel and had 45 tackles and led the team with three interceptions. He was a three-time all-state selection at Manvel and had 156 career tackles and 13 interceptions.

Michigan State Joshua Eaton, an Oklahoma and Texas State transfer and Aldine McCarthur graduate, played in 55 career games in six college seasons. He started eight games last season for the Spartans and had 19 tackles. He started every game at Texas State before transferring. Eaton was an all-district selection who ran track and played basketball.

The Texans invited University of Houston defensive lineman Carlos Allen Jr. and kicker Ethan Sanchez, but both attended the Atlanta Falcons’ local day Friday.
