Source: Texans assistant Dino Vasso stays in Houston on contract extension after being up for defensive coordinator jobs

HOUSTON – Texans defensive backs coach Dino Vasso is staying on with the AFC South franchise on a contract extension after being considered for defensive coordinator jobs, per a league source.

Vasso was requested for an interview for the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator job and withdrew from their search, per a source. He was also a potential candidate for openings with the Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns.

Vasso previous interviewed with the Tennessee Titans for their defensive coordinator job that went to Gus Bradley.

Vasso, 38, coaches All-Pro corner Derek Stingley Jr. and Pro Bowl corner Kamari Lassiter as an instrumental staff member for the Texans’ top-ranked defense.

Vasso has been mentored by Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, defensive coordinator Matt Burke and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

Vasso, a former Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles assistant, was the Eagles assistant defensive coordinator in 2020.

The Texans defense ranked second in points allowed and first in fewest yards allowed this season, giving up 277.2 yards per game.

Texans defensive passing game coordinator Cory Undlin is firmly on the Browns’ radar as a potential defensive coordinator candidate for new coach Todd Monken, per an NFL source connected to the Cleveland search.
